Production Photos of Homeless G-Men Number Three

Alright check it out, production pics of Homeless #3, as soon as I finished the second issues I launched into Homeless #3, I wanted it to be printed and ready for purchase in November at the very special event I'm organizing at the Cameron House in November. I'll have more on that later, yes I am way behind in blogging, I've done two in stores and Hamilton Comic Con and next week I'm doing two days at the Humber Campuses for a mini-con put on by Stadium Comics and I am too burnt out to write or draw right now. I did over 128 finished comics pages (plus others to use later) in seven months with a newborn baby. I am spent and need a rest, I will be back to talk more but I really just need to flake out on the couch with my dog right now
cheers, talk soon

Cover Process Homeless G-Men #3

Here's the evolution of the drawing for the cover of Homeless G-Men #3, it will be a full colour wraparound. The title text goes bottom right and the top left is reserved for reviews, blurbs etc.

Another Review of the Homeless G-Men #1

Here's a great review for the Homeless G-Men #1, this came at a great time (stop me if I've said this already) I've finished Homeless #2, I'm just going to do one more dialogue pass and then it's ready for proofing. I have a bunch of dialogue to add to Crypto #2 and a two pages that need colouring and I am still flatting and colouring Battle #2.  I hope to have all three books ready for proofing by July 6th.
I don't think I'll ever work like this again, for the third issues I'm going to draw and colour the pages as I go instead of drawing all of the pages of the books and then colouring them. I want to do a fully finished page a day so then I can spend more time on dialogue.
I'm saying this since I want to have Homeless #3 ready for a comic show in November and then have Crypto #3 and Battle #3 ready for April.
Anyways, here's a great review of the book and there's a link to my store to purchase.

Homeless G-Men #1 Review

Here's a review from May for the Homeless G-Men #1 from a reviewer aptly named "G-Man" on Comics Anonymous, a lower rating when compared to how much he liked the book but it's a good summary just the same.
read the review here, why I'm not always getting link posts now is beyond me

Crypto Zombic #1 Review

"If you're a fan of horror/sci-fi/zombie epics then give this a shot. If you're just a traveling fan of "The Walking Dead" and "jurassic World", then give this a shot also. You won't be disappointed. I give this comic an 8 out of 10."
Nice to wake up to this review today from Brad Dee at Movie Pilot, read the whole review here,  http://moviepilot.com/braddee  you can find him on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/braddee101

This review really comes at a great time as I'm finishing up the second issues, here's a teaser from Crypto Zombic #2 (before colours)

Comic Updates! New Issues!

Hey there everyone just wanted to let you know the progress of the second issues.
The Homeless G-Men #2 is completely coloured and most of the words have been added, I'll just be tweaking the dialogue, checking my spelling and making sure all of the jokes are as funny as can be.
Crypto Zombic #2- I still have to colour four or five pages of the issue and add the dialogue. The front cover needs tweaking and the back cover at the point of writing does not exist.
Battle Rally #2 (see picture above) I have five more pages to draw and then it will be time to colour and add dialogue to the whole books, both covers are done (and they're awesome) and I have to write the intro page still.
In sum. I am in a great place to have all three books finished and ready for proofing by the first week of July then they're off to the printers. The usual turn around time is seven weeks (including shipping) so I should have all three books in early September available for purchase.
If you want the books sent to you check me out here.

Also I will have announcements coming in the next couple of weeks about in store appearances, signings and conventions. so keep on checking in
cheers!

Niagara Falls Comic Con or "the Sink is in the Hallway"

June 8, 2015 at 12:16pm
This past weekend I headed up to Niagara Falls for my second big con, this was going to be different, this was the first time I would be away from my wife and daughter. I'd been invited to come along and share an exhibitors' booth with the guys from @blackholehuntersclub, @shaneamato and @rickylima, not only would we be sharing the table but crashing together for two nights in the gorgeous, "Niagara's Best Inn". I wasn't nervous about staying with the guys, Shane and I talk regularly on fb and I knew we were going to have a good time while we were there. I was also more confident with this con since I've gotten to know some other vendors and comic artists ( @NikZezos, @MikeRooth @KeithArana and Jason Loo creator of @ThePitifulHumanLizard) so there would be some friendly faces there as well.
My approach to this con would be all about attitude, I wanted to be positive the whole time I was there, I was not going to let a lack of sales or interest get me down, I would pitch and pitch and make friends and sell some books.
The first day of the Con was mostly about set up we had great vendors on either side of us Tony and his wife and kid Maxx were great to hang with and to the other side of us was a guy who was selling special variant covers of certain books and I was able to get a copy of Squarriors no.1 which I hadn't been able to get my hands on in Toronto. I also traded a copy of Homeless G-Men to they guys from Hypnotic Dog studios who do a book called "Insurance" and also get a copy (with a sketch for Lucky) of Dan Holst Soelberg's new book, "Shadow Abuse" - if you are a fan of Edward Gorey you have to check out this guy's stuff, it's fantastic, traded one of my sketch covers for this great "Odin's Ale" shirt by HeavyMentalDesigns (@KeithArana).
Insaurance, Shadow Abuse and SquarriorsInsaurance, Shadow Abuse and Squarriors
The first day of the con was slow but I did sell a couple of comic packs and got commissioned for a sketch by a guy named Chris, who I had drawn before at GTA Comic Con, Chris is a really nice dude who gets artists at all the cons to draw pictures of him doing all kinds of crazy stuff (my drawing is on instagram @madcraftyshay). We went for Tacos and checked into our hotel, a real rat trap and like the title suggests - the sink was in the hallway. Didn't sleep well the first night, there was too much on my mind.
SATURDAY - this is the long haul day 9.5 hours. the line up was massive and wrapped around the building which gave all the vendors some hope that Saturday was going to be huge for sales. I pitched and pitched, getting your pitch down to get people to stop and come hang with you is incredibly important you have to have it down pat, if you've got your pitch you can improvise and respond to whoever is looking at your books. I pitched and talked so much that I started to lose my voice - if that happened I'd be screwed. Sales were slow that day and it was discouraging, lots of looking and chatting but not a lot of money being spent. Remember, no one has heard of me or my comic - I have to convince folks that my book is worth buying. This time I added a free sticker to every purchase, it didn't seem to help much. The day ended and this was the night to go out. We headed over to @BigBComics to check out a cool display of Captain Canuck comics and older Canadian comic books, they were great hosts, then it was off to the Fallsview buffet with @ChrisYao, @KevinHickey and @KevinS.Boyd and Jason Loo to jam down as much food as possible since I'd gone the whole day eating almonds, granola bars and drinking vitamin C infused water. Food and drink at cons is expensive most vendors try to avoid buying any food. After dinner it was time to hit a bar and meet up with some other comic artists (if you're interested to know who was there pm me, this ain't about name dropping). I felt like an idiot after being introduced to these guys since my voice kept cracking and dropping out completely, I probably sounded like a prepubescent teenager. We also found out that a hooker had been killed in our hotel, we were not surprised.
SUNDAY - SPEND THE MONEY DAY
I always give out my comics to creators that I respect and this time I gave out books to Phil Hester, James O'Barr, Yannick Paquette and Rafael Alberquerque, I always hope to hear from any of them either for criticism or to maybe try and talk about getting a blurb for the back of one of my books. I sold a bunch of copies of "Crypto Zombic", people in Niagara Falls LOVE horror and violence. I put out my Jason vs. The Punisher print and had people vote on who would win the fight, it added an intereactive element to draw people in and then pitch my book. Sales were not great this day either but I did buy myself a couple of presents anyway.
I bought these two awesome pages (from artists who live in the GTA, yeah travel to Niagara Falls to buy art from your neighbour) from Ken Lashley and Leonard Kirk, it was great talking to Lashley who has one of my books but hasn't read it yet. It was nice to be remembered, and I'm going to learn a ton from studying the work. I like buying pages more than I like buying comics.

Ken Lashley Black Panther pageKen Lashley Black Panther page
Leonard Kirk X-Factor pageLeonard Kirk X-Factor page
The con started to wind down, sales were not great for anyone really but I came out of this one, wearing this cool shirt

Heavy Mental DesignsHeavy Mental Designs
I did my accounting at a great brew pub and knew that the money was not going to be good, I did pay for my table and my hotel room but all of the other costs, travel, cabs, food, beer, presents made it a loss for me. I wanted to make money at this con, but I learned more about attitude and sales that will help me at the next one.
And of course I sold a comic to the guy sitting beside me at the bar.
thanks for reading

My First Toronto ComiCon As A Vendor

The challenge of doing Toronto ComiCon became evident in the first half hour of being there - how do you sell a comic no one has heard of to people who are attending a Comic Convention. I am competing with established properties and all the other streams of fandom that gather at these events (videogames, cartoons, sci fi shows, etc.). It is going to be a difficult weekend, this con is not just about comics and it really isn't about independent comics at all, ComiCon is just the name of the convention.
Across from my table is Jason Loo a Toronto comic maker who self publishes a book called, "the Pitiful Human Lizard" which is set in Toronto, I've spoken to him online several times and make sure to introduce myself to him, he's a very nice guy, approachable and good company. To my left and right are some much younger folks who exclusively draw nintendo and pokemon characters - they are a huge draw and get lots of business, I realize that I am not part of the Pokemon or Mario Kart generation and that I am going to have a tough weekend selling books.
I read a very comforting essay by one of the writers at Comix Tribe about selling self published work he said, "the most comics I have ever sold at a Con is forty don't get discouraged if you don't sell 1000 books." So I know that my mark is to sell 40 books. I may not even pay for my table which cost $282.50, I start keeping track of every penny I spend at the con, I will have to tally up all of these costs and see how I do.
There were many artists that I respect at the event and I knew I had to get out of Artist's Alley where I was set up and talk to a bunch of them. I would get to the con at 9:30 and try to get to all of them before the event began at 10AM, I was able to give a copy of The Homeless G-Men or Crypto Zombic to Ken Lashley, Ben Templesmith, Ty Templeton (who critiqued my book for me and was a great help), Mike Rooth, Dan Parent, Mike Del Mundo, Nick Bradshaw (an incredibly nice guy and very helpful when talking about pens and tools of the trade), Jim Zub, Larry Hama, Gibson Quarter and one of my all time art heroes, Michael Golden. So I knew that at least these guys would take a look at my work and maybe I'd hear back from them at some point in the future, even if it was just an encouraging tweet.
I sold a few books that day but the crowd was mostly grazing around and seeing what was there, many vendors said they sold very little and it was a challenging day but Saturday and Sunday are the "real"l days of the con.
SATURDAY - This is the big nine hour haul, I could not believe how many people had come, I started to use my instagram account (madcraftyshay) to try to let people know where I was, snapping pics of cosplayers and my sketches and working hard to bring attention to the guy at table A125, I sold a few more comics and a couple of comic packs and one print - this was not going well. I was talking to folks as much as I could and trying to bring traffic to my table. If one person stops to browse it usually attracts three more and if something looks like a crowd, more people come to that area. There were many cool cosplayers and I made sure to complement them all. Normally on Saturday even the vendors dress up in costume, I totally forgot about this. I kept working on my pitch from, "Hi, how ya doing." to "Hey do you like comics." I was getting better at selling.  It was a long and exhausting day I can tell you right now I did not enjoy it.
SUNDAY the last day of the con and I was determined to sell more books and get art from folks I like and pick up books from other local comic artists after all we are in this together.
Here's a sketch of Jughead by Dan Parent who drew Archie for years, I wanted this for Lauren's nurseryHere's a sketch of Jughead by Dan Parent who drew Archie for years, I wanted this for Lauren's nursery

Local creators represent!Local creators represent!
I started to enjoy myself more because I gave myself permission on the last day to not give a shit. I started to sell more books, the Homeless G-Men was very popular. A kid brought me his sketchbook and had me critique it for him and give him drawing tips, one guy said, "You were on InnerSpace!" and my prints were popular and drew a bit of attention but no real sales. The last two hours were a bit of a drag, I was selling but my energy had bottomed out. I was very happy that my inlaws had been staying with us helping my wife with our one month child. I started chatting with more vendors and getting a sense of their weekend, it didn't seem that anyone had the best time of it with sales except the guys who do prints of video game characters, they were nice people and had done many cons they were great to have as a resource. I now have more concrete plans of how I would do it if I wanted to do it again, what to draw, what prints to make etc.
I thanked a lot of the staff, said my goodbyes to other vendors and went to the Cameron House and sold four comic packs in under ten minutes.
I tallied up my sales, I sold over 50 comics and one print, so I beat the 40 comic mark, I made about $275. so I didn't pay for my table entirely, but I didn't expect to, this was my first con and i just wanted to see if I would do another and I do, I signed up for next year's ComiCon before I left for home.
I am sure I will add more to this note, just wanted to get it all down. I'm taking a day to rest today and try not to succumb to a flu or cold and tomorrow I'll pick up my pens and get back to work on the second issues of the comics series. I  did have fun, the less I thought about what I was doing, I'm sure what I've learned about setting up my booth and building up an audience over the next few months will serve me well later.
thanks for readin

Artist's Alley table 125 at Toronto ComiCon!

Burning the candle at both ends getting prints, stickers, drawings and all kinds of goodness ready for Toronto ComiCon. I even ran out of printer ink for my beast but luckily one of my ink suppliers was able to get it to me via Express and for that I am eternally grateful. The bundle at the top is a limited edition bag of three comics, four stickers and a mini print that you can get for $20.00 quantities are limited and once the prints are gone they are gone for good and the package stays at the $20.00 price point.
There are very few of the Deep Sea Diver prints, they will be $20.00 each and I do have a limited amount of screwed up copies where you will get both prints for $20.00 they just don't have a border on them.
There will also be inked drawings (photos later) and lots of sketch covers ($60.00 each for one character).
Had a great talk with Mark Pawz of StuffLikeThat podcast and we'll be doing an interview in the near future.
All right, hope to see you at ComiCon!

Tonight On InnerSpace!

I'll be up at Seven Crowns Tattoo (2499 Yonge Street) Thursday from 2pm-7pm drawing and signing comics. If you aren't able to come by before April 21rst when the show comes down you can pick up comics at The Beguling (Mirvish Village) and the Silver Snail (Yonge Street, beside the HMV) you can also order directly from me and use paypal.
Here's a great pic that was sent to me of someone reading Crypto Zombic!

If ordering in Canada all three comics, shipping and taxes is $19.50, other orders (USA and other countries) will cost a little bit more.

Also it looks like the segment Matthew Ellis and I did on the show and the intersection of tattoos and comics will air  TONIGHT! on the Space Channel. We did a great interview with Teddy Wilson so tune into Innerspace tonight (Wednesday) for the show at 6 & 11pm, it will also run on MTV Canada, not sure what time that will happen.
have a great day,
